Flash and Gordon. Two abused black kittens that
had the fortune to fall into my care. One with a white 'flash' on his
chest whom I called accordingly, and the other naturally became Gordon
after that super hero. I was fostering them at the time and didn't expect
them to keep their names long, however I grew to too attached to both
them and their names and consequently kept them..

Goblin. My classmate's mom found a greasy little
kitten in front of their house on Halloween. Apparently, the kitten
had climbed under a car's hood to escape the cold. Suzanne (my classmate)
says the cat isn't always very bright, but she's the cutest I've ever
seen. The only problem is her fur. Goblin has two colors, black and
white. When she sheds on you, one color always shows up on your clothes,
no matter what you're wearing. .
Jetta. Fast and Agile like the car! And such a
pretty thing. Newly adopted Sister of Gibson (below)..

Gretchen. Gretchen was a German-born little angel
who just happened to live in the cutest, sweetest little cat's body.
She was a gray tabby who only lived three years because her heart was
defective. Her German vets were wonderful and helped give her a comfortable
life until Gretchen decided it was time to give up her defective body.
We managed to rescue her from a feral colony at an American military
installation in Germany when she was a few weeks old. She taught me
a great deal about love, caring and patience. My whole family was totally
mesermized by her and even her vets cried with us when we finally had
to put her down. I miss her so much!. Submitted

Picasso and Toulouse-Latrec. We have very talented
cats. You've no doubt seen their work in museums....Yeah, right. Picasso
was our first cat, and she is a petite Burmese-type. She is a little
pixie, and, of course, her formal name becomes Picasso. Toulous was
so named because she was the runt of the litter as was the painter.
She is a Maine Coon-type and is as curious as cats can be. Affectionately,
she is known as Toos or Toosie. Of course, when she gets into trouble,
which is often, her name becomes Toulucifer. .

Squash. Squash got her name because the people
who found her as a stray said she was shaped just like a little gourd.
Turned out that round little tummy was actually a pregnancy! She's a
beautiful tortoiseshell, so her mottled coloring also looks like some
dried gourds, so Squash is particularly appropriate for her. I believe
in Great Britain they have a drink called orange squash, so they might
want to give this name to an orange cat.. Submitted

Wilbur and Orville. These are two orange-and-white
brothers named after the Wright brothers, who flew at Kitty Hawk. I
call them the "right" brothers. Orville has more orange on his back,
so he got the "O" name, and Wilbur has more white, so he got the "W"
name.. Submitted by Anita

Sylvia (Plath) and Ted (Hughes). Named after the
poets. Sylvia (brown oriental shorthair)seems the kind of cat that might
just commit suicide in a fit of existential angst. Ted (fat black longhair)got
his name just to match w/ Sylvia originally, but he seems to have grown
into it. Not quite poet laureate material, but he does seem to spend
a lot of time contemplating nature..

Sydney. Sydney is Pooter's playmate. She thinks
Pooter is the best ear licker around. Sydney was a stray begging for
food at my front door. One day she came up limping, her back leg had
been injured. So a few trips to the vet and some recupe time in the
laundry room and she was part of the family. She is now a loving indoor
cat that can't get enough lovin..
Pooter. Pooter is a six year old black and white
calico house kitty who weighs in at 17 pounds. He's a happy cat!!.
Sophie. Sophie came to us as a wild cat we were
feeding when we were renting a house in a small town. She used to be
so skittish, that if she saw me from the neighbor's yard she would run!
She started getting braver and coming to our back porch so we began
feeding her. After quite a while, she began allowing me to pet and brush
her. She has long gray fur and she had so many mats. I hadn't named
her because I didn't want to get too attached. That was impossible though,
she was so cute! She would flop onto her back and present her belly
to me to be brushed and squint at me with her bedroom eyes. It was my
husband who finally said, "Let's adopt her and take her to the vet to
get her fixed." We took her in and got her spayed and all of her shots.
And she moved with us and our other 3 cats, Jonas, Hendrix and Patchez
to our new apartment. She is now part of our family.
Submitted by Lorilee Davis <Nealzgirl@netscape.com>
Patchez. Her first owner died when we were living
in my husband's apartment complex. The complex manager took her in,
she already had the name Patches. We told the complex manager we were
interested in adopting Patches and after about a month, she showed up
on our doortstep and handed Patches to us insisting she was too much
of a handful to take care of. We took her in and changed her name to
"Patchez" feeling it was more appropriate since our other cats had unique
names. This was 4 years ago. Her personality has really developed and
she is absolutely fearless. She loves to go for car rides to the park.
She is also leash-trained, so we take her for walks. She's our princess!.
Jonas. Jonas was named by my brother after the
little boy in "Sleepless in Seattle." We added the "s" to make it more
unique. He is a pound rescue, black and white baby. At least he thinks
he's a baby. He was obtained after my cat Smokey (I'd had her for 16
years)died. My boss at work took me to the humane society to get another
cat. He's a special guy!. Submitted by Lorilee
Davis <Nealzgirl@netscape.net>

Scotch. Scotch is a big red tabby who came to
me with the name Butterscotch. He had the FIV virus and the people who

Ebony & Jeepers. Ebony was a stray black cat in
our neighborhood & when I first she her I fell in love w/ her & said
"come here my little Ebony cat" She came right over & it was a match!
First cat I ever really loved. "Jeepers" really Jeepers Creepers cuz
of his funny beady sortof crossed eyes as a baby, till he grew into
them & he was also totally black too,aka know as the Jeep, or the Jeepster
was a very little baby I heard crying outside. Spotted him, but he ran
behind a garage & into a old length of piping stored there. Had to reach
in & grab him, but amazingly he didn't claw or bite, but was prefectly
tame. We were bonded from then on...even though he was quite a handful
growing up. Unfortunately both these sweethearts were killed in a house
fire while my mom was babysitting them when I was on vacation. She lost
a cat & dog along with most of her possessions & almost her own life.
When I came from vacation, a new friend was waiting on my porch begging
to come in, that belonged to a neighbor who was unable to keep her(Callie)
NOW "Kali". I believe she was sent by "my Ebony" to help me w/ my grief
over her & little Jeeps demise. Kali has been truly a heaven sent kitty,
so I seriously feel I was being watched over from "Kitty Heaven". .

Pearl aka Purrl or Purrlie. Purrlie was a kitten
found hanging around in my backyard, under my gardenshed one summer.
Wild & very scared. She was dark silvery grey like a South seas Tahitian
black pearl. It took me 4 mos.to tame this baby, but she is one of the
loves of my life! My other loves are KALI. After the "Goddess Kali",
a calico lady and my sweet shy GRACIE, a grey striped tabby, who was
also a foundling. .
Kali. When we got Kali form the shelter, they
had named her Callie, she is a callico. But after just a little while,
we found she didn't deserve such a common name, yet we didn't want to
change it since she had it for over a year. So, we changed the spelling
to give it a little more attitude, like she has. .

Riff. 11 years ago we adopted 2 six weeks old
tabby brothers, we decided on the names Riff and raff, since my husband
plays the guitar. When raff was 1 year old he developed urinary problems
and had to have a complete sex change done in order for him to urinate.
He lived for 4 years after the operation, but unfortunatley we had to
have him euthinised do to complications in his health. The name suited
them well as they both liked to sit and listen to my husband play his
guitar. We still have Riff who is now 11, but he too has to be kept
on feline C/D food do to the same problems. Riff has been a real treasure
and I,m sure he will be with us for many more years to come..

Norton. Once there was a newspaper comic by a
cartoonist named O'Neill, called Odd Bodkins. One of the characters
was Norton 750, named after the motor- cycle; and Norton 750 went to
Mars, where he died, but that's another story. *My* Norton was a half-
dead runt with a tiny wizened body and an over- sized, pop-eyed head:
he remined me of one of the extraterrestrial 'greys,' which in turn
brought to mind (for no good reason) Norton 750. Since the Norton 750
was a very, very large motorcycle too, it had a bassackward appropriateness
for so small a kitten. These days, Norton is a fine-looking figure of

Maneki Neko. Sorry, my cat hit the button before
I could correct and finish!! Maneki, or Neki, is a Manx that I adopted
from a cats-rescue. In Japanese Legend, at the beginning of Edo period
(17th century), there was a rundown temple in Setagaya, western part
of Tokyo. The priest of the temple kept a pet cat , named Tama, and
he sometimes complained to Tama about his poor situation, "Tama, I'm
keeping you in spite of my poverty. So couldn't you do something for
this temple? " One day, Naotaka Ii who was the lord of Hikone district
(western part of Japan near Kyoto) was caught a shower near the temple
on his way home from hunting. While avoiding the rain under a big tree
in front of the temple, Naotaka noticed that a cat was inviting him
on the temple gate. And as soon as he left the tree tempted by the cat's
gesture, the tree was struck by lighting. Naotaka's life was saved by
the cat which was proved to be Tama. By the incident, Naotaka became
closer to the priest of the temple. The rundown temple was appointed
to be the Ii's family temple, and changed it's name to Goutokuji. Goutokuji
became prosperous backed up by the Ii clan after that. Tama saved Naotaka
from lighting, and saved the temple from it's poverty at the same time.
After it's death, Tama was buried at Goutokuji's cat cemetery with all
due respect, and Maneki Neko was invented admiring Tama. If you go to
Japanese restaurants and businesses, sometimes you will see a statue
of a white tailess cat with a beckoning paw in the air. This is a symbol
of good luck to that business. Well, maybe Maneki has brought me luck
as well, because I found such an interest and sweet cat to love!.

Zen. My small elderly cat was already named "Zen"
when I adopted him when he was 14. His previous owner gave him the name,
I don't know why. He is detached, independent, and a bit inscrutable,
and will settle down on anything lying on the floor with all his feet
tucked in, looking as though he's meditating. Perhaps this is the reason
for his name..
Maroef. This name came frome a comic book (Suske
en Wiske) by Willy Vandersteen. The album was called: "de poezelige
poes", wich is dutch for "the sweet cat". As far as I know the name
doesn't have a real meaning and was made up by the author of the comic
book. But it probably means something like sweet cat. It is a name for

Jericho and Judah. My 2 cats are named after cities
in the bible which start with the letter 'J'. I wanted to be different.
If I had a 3rd cat, I would name it Jerusalem. Jericho is a 1.5 year
old black and white american shorthair male. Jericho's personality is
that of a suave and debonaire cat. If Jericho could talk, his voice
would be very similar to that of a Butler born and raised to serve the
English Royal family. He is VERY particular in what he eats, what he
plays with, and who holds him, how they hold him, and how long they
hold him. When Jericho is ready for my husband and I to wake up (be
that 4:30am or 6:00am) he will emit long wails until he is successful!
However, when Jericho is ready to be alone, he will find himself a new
hideout where he can enjoy his alone time. Jericho enjoys playing hide-and-seek
with me (Christina). I hide around a corner, and my husband watches
as Jericho creeps through the room looking for me. Jericho's tail wags
back and forth and his ears are perked strait up as he gets closer and
closer to meow-ma's scent. Just as Jericho nears my hideout, my husband
signals to me and I jump out with a loud 'BOO!'. Jericho jumps and runs
off down the hall with me in hot pursuit. It is a joy to play this game
with Jericho. Judah is our 'miracle' kitty, more on that later. Judah
on the other hand is almost the opposite. He has the personality of
Tigger on Winnie the Pooh. Judah is a male multi-colored american shorthair
with stripes like a tiger. He has freckles on his little nose, has little
white paws and a thick patch of white fur on his neck. Even though Judah
is 8 months old, he still has a squeak to his meow. When he feels as
if nobody is around and he needs attention, he will move through the
house 'squeaking' until somebody picks him up and loves on him. So,
we nicknamed him 'squeaky'. Judah's favorite game to play with Meow-Ma
is fetch. If I (Christina) pick up one of his twenty or so little furry
mice toys and throw it across the house or down the stairs, Judah will
take off like lightning and attack the mouse. He will then bring it
back to me and if he is in a giving mood, place it into my hand. If
he is not in a giving mood, I must fight this vicious little 8 month
old kitten for the mouse. Judah has many, many, many of these little
mice toys. Although I try to keep them in the downstairs den, Judah
is constantly taking them throughout the house and hiding them under
throw rugs, furniture, bed sheets, quilts, and whereever else he can
find. Late one Sunday night, when Judah was 6 months old, he began to
emit long wails of pain and was throwing up all over the house. I immediately
rushed him to the emergency animal care center. They ran tests on the
little guy and determined and immediately rushed him into surgery. The
doctor told me that if I had brought him to them just one hour later,
he would have died. You see, his larger intestine had begun to 'swallow'
his smaller intestine. The vet explained it to me like this: 'It's as
if you were rolling a pair of socks up'. There was absolutley no warning
of this condition, as a matter of fact, just that morning we were playing
'fetch'. The total vet bills for this was over $1200.00 dollars! Our
vet often gave us free visits and xrays after Judah's surgery during
his recovery. For two weeks, I spoon fed him warm a diet mixed with
baby food every two hours night and day. My husband applied hot compresses
to his incision. Judah was very weak and in a lot of pain after surgery,
but with his diet and Meow-Ma's love, soon began to regain his strength.
After about two weeks, Judah was back on his little springy paws bouncing
around our house and 'squeaking' for attention just like in the past.
It still brings tears to our eyes to think of our little miracle so
loving and so sweet who almost died and left the world before he had
a chance to live his life. 'Yes, these cats are our children.' .

Tarnished Silver (Silvery). This name was perfect
for a bright silver tabby I found at the Humane Society. When she was
little she looked just like a gleaming silver cat with some tarnish
stripes. Now she has darkened all over. She's also called "Siamese Cat
in Tabby Clothing" because she talks all the time..
QAT. From the B. Kliban cat books. Best for grey
tabbies..
Mr. Polite. This name was for a big, tough, male
orange tabby I found on my front porch one day. He got this name because,
unlike my other cats, he would always ask before he jumped on the bed.
He was a very sweet and affectionate boy..

Bene Gesseritt (pronounced Benny Jessarett). Name
originated from the "Dune" sci-fi series by Frank Herbert. The Bene
Gesseritt were a long line of female telepathic witches, known for their
use of "voice" commands which no one could resist. They were immortal
in that as one died, all of her knowledge, powers, and experiences were
inherited by her next - if that one survived the experience. Bene Gesserit
is a beautiful white female cat with dark grey, black, and brindle spots,
including the crown on her head. She was rescued as a kitten from Halifax
Humane Society Shelter in Daytona Beach, FL. She was very ill, and the
vet did not expect her to survive, but she did. She became quite a vocal
commander, developed a rich, thick, silky coat, and hypnotic eyes. Stunning.
Great hunter, loves to play with children! .

Addison ("Sony"). I found Addison at the Tuscaloosa
(Alabama) Humane Society about 12 years ago. At the time, "Moonlighting"
was a popular tv show, and David Addison was "the hippest" character

was the only one "keeping time" to the radio music with his tail. I
promptly named him "Addison" and brought him home with me. My mother
eventually shortened it to "Sony," so now he turns everytime he hears
the word "Sony" on the television as part of a commercial..
